License Plate Information
We appreciate your interest in the Virginia Loves Trees license plate.
Application
You do not need to wait for your current plate to expire before you apply for the Virginia Loves Trees specialty license plate. Do it today! Once we receive the required 450 applications, we will submit our request to the General Assembly. Once the plate design is approved, you will be notified by the DMV and your plate will be sent to you. See the DMV's FAQ sheet on the specialized plate development process.
Costs
In addition to your vehicle registration fee, this specialty plate costs $25 annually for non personalized plates and an additional $10 if you wish to personalize your specialty plate. The $25 fee is tax deductible.
These plates are revenue sharing meaning that Virginia Loves Trees will collect $15 for every plate that is sold or renewed after the initial 1,000 are issued. We will use these funds support our numerous ongoing and future urban forestry programs (see About Us).
You may go back to a regular license plate at any time by turning in the specialty plate to the DMV. There are no refunds given for unused portion of special fees.
License Plate Design
The Virginia Loves Trees license plate was designed by Virginia Tech graphic design students at Four Design. The proposed design is a prototype of the license plate and it has not been formally approved by the General Assembly, the Governor or DMV. It may be subject to minor changes.
General Assembly Approval
The license plate prototype will be submitted along with the bill to the General Assembly and Governor for approval in the 2013 session. In order for the General Assembly to review our request, we must submit 450 pre-paid license plate applications. After the 450 pre-paid applications are collected with the requisite fees, they will be submitted along with the drafted bill to the General Assembly and Governor for approval. Once approved, they will be submitted to DMV.
All money collected will be held in a special non-interest bearing account. If we do not reach the requisite 450 pre paid applications OR if the General Assembly and/or Governor deny our request, all collected fees and applications will be returned minus a $3 processing fee.
